BIRTH DEFECTS
Ventricular septal defect
Ventricular septal defect (Type II)
The ventricular septum is the wall that separates the right ventricle from the left ventricle. In this defect there is an abnormal opening in the wall that allows blood to be shunted between the two ventricles. If the defect is small, the only symptom may be a loud heart murmur. However, if the defect is large, congestive heart failure is a risk. With surgery the defect can be repaired.
