BIRTH DEFECTS

Tracheoesophageal fistula

A fistula is a tube. The esophagus is a tube that goes to the stomach and the trachea is a tube that goes to the lungs. Normally these two tubes do not connect but when a baby has a tracheoesophageal fistula, there is a tube connecting the two. This can cause problems with feeding and even breathing in newborns and needs to be corrected.
