BIRTH DEFECTS
gastroschisis
Gastroschisis
Gastroschisis occurs when the intestines are displaced outside of the abdomen through a defect in the abdominal wall. This condition is very similiar to an omphalocele, which is when the intestines are displaced out
and into the umbilical cord. These conditions can be surgically repaired at birth. As long as the bowel is not damaged, the outcome for the surgery is very good.
